Rep. Eric Swalwell, who has represented California’s 14th district in the U.S. Congress since 2013, posted a series of statements on social media on October 31, 2025, expressing concerns about the treatment of federal employees during government shutdowns and immigration enforcement.
In a post published at 00:38 UTC, Swalwell stated: “No federal employee should work without pay. Period. It’s inhumane.
Democrats have offered legislation to pay EVERY federal employee during the shutdown. Republicans run Washington and vote it down every time.”
Later that night, at 02:22 UTC, he shared a personal account regarding his family’s concerns about immigration policy: “Tonight before bed my 8-year-old asked me if the immigrants we know are going to be put in jail. I told him no. But that may be a lie.
We are better than this.”
At 11:20 UTC on the same day, Swalwell reiterated his call for supporting government staff by posting: “Pay federal workers”.
Eric Swalwell has served as a member of Congress since succeeding Pete Stark in 2013 and currently resides in Livermore, California. He was born in Sac City, Iowa in 1980 and holds both a BA from the University of Maryland, College Park (2003), and a JD from the University of Maryland, Baltimore (2006).
